At 28, Niña is one of our younger contributors, and one of our most passionate. “I’m passionate about everything…If I could do all the things I love at the same time, my life would be fulfilled.”
Niña like to create, all things beautiful. From cement geometric plant pots, to paper cut out lamps, to origami folded lampshades, to sunburst mirrors, everything that she would like to have in her own home. Marble Matter has been her creative enterprise for about two years, though she has always been the ‘crafty type’ and loves DIY. Most of the things in her own home are things that she created for herself or re-invented.
She love trends, and has a good eye for style, drawing inspiration from many mediums. If it’s not from others or the “awesome thing called the Internet”, then it’s nature. She feels that one should never limit oneself to just one influence, but accept and embrace all.
Because every part of her work is hand -made, a great deal of time goes into every piece, and Niña finds that sometimes there is just not enough time to be both creative and work for a living. “Being creative is not always as easy as it seems, one needs to make time, I wish I could combine the two, but its not always as easy as that sounds” However, when the end product is completed she feels enormously rewarded, especially when it turns out perfect., although, she says, being a perfectionist, it has become rather difficult to always be 100% satisfied with the end result. She is very proud when she sells a piece – but also feels sad, as the more time she spends on the product, the harder it is to let go.
Her favourite piece is the very first lamp she ever made. “Its huge! Took me almost three days to finish, and a crazy amount of glue…”
Niña’s wish is that people could understand, that the amount of time that crafters/artists put into their work, is what should be appreciated and valued when buying something. If she could, she would change people’s perception of value so that people value others, animals and the environment, not things. To want to be the change for good within themselves, wanting to be equal and live in harmony with the world and everything in it.
