“I would rather give all my time towards a dream I am busy building, before I will give my time towards a business that doesn’t appreciate me nor my time.”
Klippie (Linda) describes herself as a three-in-one “Creator /Artist/ Crafter – an upcycle-recycler who creates handmade gifts and home décor with other people’s throw away things. “Gifts by Klippie” brings a smile to your face and joy to your heart.
When asked how her work impacts on her personal life, Klippie recounts a story when a customer knew immediately that she wasn’t married – as “all your time must be spent on these beautiful handmade products, with no time left over for a husband”! Klippie loves what she does – she involves her kids in some of her projects so that they can understand the different creative steps, and she also involves them in the selling process of the products. Her kids are her inspiration –
“I am my kids’ Mom and Dad, and as a single parent, my goal is always to be able to give my kids the best I can. I need to be able to provide for them and pay for their education. God gave me talent and I am intending using it as long as I can. While I work I tell myself: “I am successful!” I talk out loud so that I can hear myself talking. Of course, I talk to myself when crafting- I need expert advice!”
Klippie always knew that she had a lot of talent in making and creating craft. She started making unique handmade gifting and home décor to give to friends and family, as she says “Life can be so hard and depressing and I try through my work to bring inspiration to people, even if they can just relax a moment and smile.” After facing unemployment, she decided to turn her passion into a business. She took the opportunities offered to her by a pilot project in Swellendam, STEEP, who helped her negotiate the tricky start up processes, and since September 2015 with a registered business, she has become one of the project’s greatest successes and ambassadors.
“There is no right or wrong, when it comes to making craft. I just make sure that I have FUN. Fun is the most important part, splash a little paint, draw a little line….”
Linda works a lot with old materials, nature, or recycled objects to create beautiful craft products which give the Klippie products their unique features. Her warm and vibrant personality, and her sense of humour, shines through her handmade products. “If I don’t give all I have in each and every creation, I’m not giving my best! My products should bring the feeling of importance, joy, laughter and warmth to my customer’s heart so that they know a Klippie product is specially made for them – because they are special!” Customers like buying from her because they can sense the individual attention she gives to them and their needs,
Klippe comes from one big Artistic family! Her great granddad was a poet and a big woodcrafter – old school style with huge hand saws, cutting down trees and creating furniture. He also played the violin without knowing how to read music notes, and inspired his daughter, Klippie’s grandma to play the accordion and organ. Her mom has a talent in drawing pencil portraits which evolved into beautiful paintings. Her dad builds unique recycled hand crafted down scale train locomotives as Home Décor pieces. Klippie is one of four sisters; her oldest sister designs and makes wedding and bridesmaid dresses; her younger sister teaches Art classes and also paints, her youngest sister has many talents – from crocheting to paper quilling.
Linda lives in Swellendam – to get your hands on any of her beautiful and unique products you will find her at local markets – but if you can’t wait – then have a look at them on her online shop here: Gifts by Klippie
