“I will give everybody a paintbrush and paint and convince them that if you can see, you can paint.”
Elzebet was born in Swellendam and has spent her life in this beautiful town on the Cape Trade Route – but she has a burning desire to travel. She loves nature, camping, the‘simple life’. She has a full, busy life – currently running a wonderful farmstall style pub / restaurant in a heritage building, an old watermill, with her ‘larger than life’ husband, Wessel. But ask Elzebet what would she really love to do with her life and the answer is …. “Paint. On anything. It’s all I want to do.”
She draws her inspiration from the things she sees around her, and her love of Africa, its people, its animals, and the land, shines through in her work. She has been painting for over thirty years – having inherited her love of art and her talent from her mother – who is one of 8 sisters, three of whom paint. Elzebet is one of four and all the siblings are very creative. (Hope to be featuring more of this wonderful family on the website very soon) Elzebet paints from the heart, so although she takes commissions, she is somewhat reluctant, preferring to paint what inspires, moves and delights her.
She has very mixed emotions while working on a piece – at the same time both relaxed and excited, challenged and emotional. She can’t wait for the end result, although frequently she feels unsatisfied, despite the praise of all who see it! She also has mixed feelings when she sells a painting, so proud and yet, so sad – she doesn’t always want to let go. “Every painting I make is special to me. Art is so personal and sometimes difficult to share. It’s feelings on paper/canvas”
One painting which is extremely dear to her is an unfinished work – as a young artist, she and two close friends began to work together on a shared piece with the theme of how they would be when they reached the age of eighty. Tragically, one of the friends died of cancer before the painting could be completed.
When asked how she would change the world if she could, Elzebet replied “I will give everybody a paintbrush and paint and convince them that if you can see, you can paint.”
