Christiane Dreismann: Original Things
“Knowing that every day is different in regards to work, just makes me happy.”
Christiane is a passionate textile crafter. She was born in Germany to a textile/fabric designer father, and a dressmaker mother. After her matric in Germany, she started with a dressmaking apprenticeship, followed by design school, and from there, weaving with natural fibres has become her main passion. She produces home textiles such as blankets, table-runners, and cloth, but her deepest love is reserved for her scarves.
Christiane has a shop space in Swellendam, Swellengrebel Street, where she creates her wonderful products on the loom in the public eye. She has trained and now employed two fabulous girls from Zimbabwe.
“They are so talented and motivated and I know without them it would be much more difficult to realize my dream. Building a business, teaching weaving….”
Colour is what inspires Christiane – bright strong colours, tone on tone, contrast – “playing around with yarns and colours is something that is pure luxury for my daily life.”
Christiane is always keen to learn and develop – she has a huge respect for other crafters’ designs and creativity, and loves to visit South African craft markets to source all kind of ideas, designs and crafters. She find the process of creating itself very rewarding, and then on top of that, when she sells a piece, knowing that her scarves are going to travel far and that people love wearing them, fills her with pride.
Christiane has lived in South Africa for eleven years now, and says that her world view has changed – if she could make a difference to the world, she says “I would definitely try to make a difference in women’s lives.”
